Enku was active in the early Edo period. He is a nomadic monk who is said to have made around 120,000 statues of Buddhist statues throughout the country.Enku was born in Mino in 1632 (now Gifu Prefecture). He became a monk at a young age.He made a pilgrimage throughout Japan while creating 120,000 statues.Enku visited Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto and Kinki from the Chubu region. And he left various kinds of statues not only in the shrines and temples but also in the houses where the ordinary people live.This page introduces the representative Enku Buddha that remains in various parts of Japan.
